Before I start I just want to say these blogs are about my personal experiences within the industry & what I’ve learnt. They are in no way a guideline & may not apply to everyone.
Nowadays it’s easier than it ever has been to start a clothing brand.
We live in a digital era where any piece of information is available to us with a couple of key words and a click of a button.
Yet I still get questions regularly about how did you find your suppliers or how did you build your website.
Not only has the internet given us infinite possibilities to learn for free. It’s also made us lazy.
Where we would rather get all the information handed down from someone that did it before us, instead of carving our own path.
I built this brand because I believed I had a story to tell.
From day 1 I never made it about the money.
I’ve spent over 3 times more than I’ve made in the last 3 years I’ve been running Mankind Apparel.
I’m not talking small amounts either I’m talking in the 10's of thousands, so if your wanting to get into this industry to make a quick buck I’d think again.
For me this isn’t a hobbie it’s a way to show those around me anything is possible with hard work and willingness to be successful.
Be smart with your cash flow when it comes in.
Investing back into your business is by far the most important thing. Creating new collections, running AdWords, giving clothing out for free to influences it all adds up.
Apps will help you get ahead but don’t rely on them. The algorithm is harder to crack than ya mum's pin on her eftpos card.
Instagram is filled with pop up T-shirt brands buying followers in order to create attention.
You need to stand out in order to shine in a saturated market.
Don’t be fooled, the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.
To build a successful clothing brand in 2020 I believe you need 3 things:
- A solid work ethic, because consistency in this game is everything, don’t be left behind.
- A narrative, because if you can’t build a story around your brand then why are you really doing it?
- A strong mind, don’t feel disheartened when you friend doesn’t buy one of your products, it’s not always about the support. Not everyone is interested in the same thing.
So before you go out and spend thousands
printing 3 colour designs on 4 different sizes in 2 different colourways & can’t sell them
think about the principles and ask yourself what you actually want out of this journey your about to embark on.
It may save you a bunch of time and money and energy that you will never get back.
Or it may just be that passion you have been waiting to find.
Ill let you roll the Dice.
